Prioritising Mental Health – World Mental Health Day

Prioritising Mental Health – World Mental Health Day

This year on 10 October 2024 World Mental Health Day will aim to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world while mobilising efforts in support of mental health. This year’s theme will focus on prioritising mental health in the workplace and will highlight the importance of addressing mental health and well-being in people’s places of work. This day provides an opportunity for people to talk about their work and what needs to be done to make mental healthcare a reality for the benefit of employed adults everywhere who spend more time working than doing any other activity during their waking hours.

Although work should be a source of meaning, purpose and happiness for people, unfortunately, for many, it can fall short of its potential, failing to enrich their lives and instead contributing to mental health issues and excessive distress.1 In fact, according to the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), “Mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, are pervasive in workplaces globally, impacting productivity, attendance, and overall performance.”1 Other common mental health challenges in the workplace include stress as a result of excessive workloads and strenuous relationships, and burnout (a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion) caused by prolonged or excessive stress.2

This year’s World Mental Health Day will focus on various aspects of mental health in the workplace, including workplace conditions, stress management, and the importance of social inclusion and empowerment.1 The goal is to advocate for mental health at work and to establish best practices that foster environments where employees can contribute effectively and thrive.1 Not just on 10 October, but each day of the year, it’s important to remember that the workplace plays a significant role in shaping a person’s mental health, and prioritising mental health at work not only enhances employee well-being but also boosts productivity and contributes to overall organisational success.3 By prioritising mental health in the workplace, we can foster a happier, healthier and more productive environment for everyone.2

Tips for Employers to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace2

  • Promote a work–life balance: Encourage employees to take breaks and holidays, and to set boundaries between their work and personal life.
  • Provide mental health resources: Offer access to Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) or other resources to support employee mental health and well-being.
  • Train managers appropriately: Equip managers with the knowledge and skills needed to recognise and understand signs of mental distress and to support those who may be experiencing any difficulties.
  • Foster a supportive culture: Create an environment where employees feel comfortable talking about their mental health issues or concerns without worrying about stigma or discrimination.

Tips for Employees to Prioritise Mental Health in the Workplace2

  • Set clear boundaries: Make sure to establish clear boundaries between your work and personal life by avoiding checking emails or taking work calls outside of work hours.
  • Prioritise your self-care: It’s essential to make time for activities that are relaxing and reduce your stress, such as pursuing hobbies, engaging in exercise, spending time in nature and with loves ones.
  • Seek support when needed: Don’t hesitate to talk to a friend, family member or someone you trust if you’re experiencing any mental health concerns.
  • Talk to your manager: Be sure to communicate with your manager if workplace factors are contributing to your stress or mental health issues or concerns.
